NCKU works with universities in Japan, Netherlands to set up regional training platform for disaster risk reduction for Asia (National Cheng Kung University)-wn
Since its inception in 1996, Disaster Prevention Research Center (DPRC) of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has been one of the main research institutions of disaster prevention and mitigation in Taiwan. DPRC celebrated its 20th anniversary recently.
A result presentation conference was held on January 10 to mark the achievement and collaborative efforts with its partner institutes in Japan and the Netherlands.
In the conference, DPRC in alliance with Deltares Institute, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), University of Tsukuba and Kyoto University to form a regional education program and training platform for disaster management in Asia.
A signing ceremony of a memorandum of cooperation on the Asia-Pacific training platform for disaster reduction was held on January 10 at NCKU with NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su, Netherlands Trade & Investment Office (NTIO) Representative Guy Wittich, Director of DPRC Chjeng-Lun Shieh and many local government officials.
According to Shieh, the mission of DPRC is to reduce the natural hazard damage in Taiwan via knowledge of international scholars and experts, applications and research of updated technologies, as well as improving the skills of disaster prevention and rescue for the government.
In collaboration with University of Tsukuba, Kyoto University, Deltares Institute, TU Delft, NCKU has established a disaster prevention training platform to highlight the values of human-centered, mutual communication and resource sharing.
This training platform is based on the Asian Cloud which is a disaster-prevention cloud platform developed by the University of Tsukuba.
It has been used in DPRC to develop a series of disaster prevention models for 20 years.
The Asian Cloud has selected many large-scale disaster cases to create a full record as training lesson plans.
Also, the latest simulation program in Holland will be introduced to enable participants to use simulation tools to simulate disaster situations and prevent disaster mitigation.
The government officials and young scholars from University of Malaysia (UTM) and University of Yogyakarta (UGM) will be recruited in the training program.
This will be an advanced training platform for disaster prevention.
