National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) commemorated the 70th anniversary of the 228 Incident and the 30th anniversary of the Lifting of Martial Law, marking the occasion with an exhibition featuring the history of the university.

NCKU Library curated a collection of theme books and documents to highlight the crucial moments in the 85-year history of the university.

The exhibition showcased more than 30 pieces of documents related to the 228 Incident and White Terror.

Part of the documents revealing the story of some teachers tried to rescue the victims and some letters and pictures showing the story of the people involved.

Also to celebrate former professor of the university Lin Mosei’s 130th birthday, this special exhibition is meaningful to the victims of 228 Incident.

Lin Mosei was born October 30, 1887 and disappeared within days of the 228 Incident in Taiwan in 1947.

Lin was a Taiwanese academic, educator, and the first Taiwanese to receive a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree.

He is generally believed to have been killed as a part of Chinese Nationalist Party's crackdown after the island-wide civilian uprising.

Lin had a teaching position in Tainan Technical College (NCKU). According to the head of NCKU Library, Lin Mosei bronze statue donated by his students in 1994 was moved from the library museum to the exhibition area, hoping more young people know about Lin and his remarkable stories.

National Cheng Kung University was originally established under Japanese rule in January 1931 as Tainan Technical College. After the Japanese handover of Taiwan, the school name was renamed to Taiwan Provincial Tainan Junior College of Technology in March 1946, and then to Taiwan Provincial College of Engineering in October the same year. In 1949, it was one of the three existing colleges in Taiwan and it was upgraded to a provincial university in 1956 as Taiwan Provincial Cheng Kung University and then a national university in 1971 as National Cheng Kung University.
