Taiwan International Orchid Show kicks off in Tainan today
Tainan, Taiwan, March 3, 2017
Taiwan International Orchid Show 2017 (TIOS 2017), one of the three main international orchid shows, opened today at Taiwan Orchid Plantation in Houbi District, Tainan City.
A grand opening ceremony was held for the exhibition on the morning of March 3, which was attended by Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-Wen, who said orchid is the pride of Taiwanese people.
According to the show's organizers, attendees have the opportunity to virtually design their own breed of orchid.
With four exhibition halls distinctly embodying one of the following four ideas: ecology, technology, life, and exploration, TIOS 2017 is themed Discover Sustainable Orchids.
One of the highlights of the show is the virtual reality (VR) technology, which pairs a cardboard VR viewer with a "VR Dream Orchids" app, which allows users to virtually breed a wide range of hypothetical orchids from the different characteristics and parts of five existing breeds.
The other exhibition halls showcase the historical and ecological relationship between Tainan and orchids, with over 10,000 world-class orchids available for purchase.
Among the award-winning orchids, one will be crowned the champion for TIOS 2017.
TIOS is one of the largest international orchid trading platforms. With thousands of different types of orchids, numerous visitors all around the world flock to Tainan to participate in TIOS every March.
Besides, the international conferences, forums, competitions and displays related to orchids attract foreign buyers.
In order to enhance Taiwan’s international competitiveness on the orchid industry, this time, the show uses VR technology to make the public understand orchids more easily.
Moreover, the organizers invite experts and scholars from different countries to take part in the international conference to discuss the prospects of the orchid industry and the medicinal value of orchids.
The issue of ecological changes and how the orchid industry deals with extreme climate changes are also discussed.
