Metabolic syndrome has become increasingly common in Taiwan, and it is a major public health problem. A new health program on metabolic syndrome will be launched at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on February 17, to support students as they adopt and sustain behaviors that lower the risk of metabolic syndrome and improve physical condition.

The program aimed to promote healthy living among NCKU students, according to the Health Center in NCKU.

The program coordinators hoped to help students with the high risk of metabolic syndrome evaluate their health condition and develop healthy eating habits.

According to the head of the Health Center, metabolic syndrome is a collection of symptoms that can lead to diabetes and heart disease and it is also the warning of the occurrence of chronic diseases.

The primary causes of metabolic syndrome include obesity, physical inactivity, and possible genetic factors.

In recent years, the medical examination data shows that there is an increasing number of students at great risk for metabolic syndrome.

The new health program will target at the freshmen and sophomores (including graduate students) and the seniors are also welcomed to join!

Screened from the medical examination, the students at a greater risk for developing metabolic syndrome will receive an invitation email to join the new program.

This health program is a one-semester-long program that will involve professional coaches, weekly sports programs and weekly nutritional counseling sessions to educate students on the importance of exercise and healthy diet.

The participants will be equipped with an iWatch which is a smart watch developed by NCKU research team.

The students will be able to take home the iWatch for free if they complete the 30-minute moderate-intensify continuous training every day, take 1 million steps, and get positive result on the measurement of body indicators at the end of the semester.

In addition, the participants will get prizes, including meal tickets, sports coupons, sports water bottles and so on.

The Health Center in NCKU is committed to provide the students and faculty with proper concepts of health, good hygiene and to strengthen physical and mental health in order to provide a healthy and safe campus environment for studying, working and living.
