Taiwan’s university, industry, German’s SLM Solutions, sign cooperation agreement on metal 3D printing research
Tainan, Taiwan, December 5, 2016
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, signed a cooperation agreement today with SLM Solutions Group AG, Circle Metal Powder Co., Ltd, and Bostonhood Co., Ltd. to enhance technological advances in additive manufacturing in 3D printing.
A press conference organized by Mechanical Technology Research and Development Center and Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics in NCKU was held on the morning of December 5 to mark the joint efforts among NCKU, SLM Solutions Group AG, Circle Metal Powder Co., Ltd, and Bostonhood Co., Ltd.
Dr. Muh-Rong Wang, a professor of aeronautics and astronautics, said in the conference, “We are searching for the partnership to develop the leading technology for additive manufacturing and powder productions.”
Mr. Ralf Frohwerk, Global Head of Business Department of SLM Solution, a leading provider of 3D additive technology, claimed that he is very impressed by the research and technology breakthrough done by Mechanical Technology Research and Development Center in NCKU.
In his remarks, Frohwerk said, “on the way to use from prototype to see your production, you need partners on board to understand this technology and to understand what is needed for this technology.”
“For us, it’s extremely important to have partners on board who help us to satisfy the final customers, that means the machine systems is not sufficient,” said Frohwerk adding, “We need partners like powder suppliers on board who have clear understanding what is needed for this technology, and also to give help and support to the customers in handing the powder.”
Dr. Muh-Rong Wang indicated that special control schemes are needed to produce
the metal powders for additive distribution control, and microstructure control, etc.
He also said, Various powder technologies have been developed in NCKU, Taiwan, including the powders of Sn, Al, Cu, stainless steel, Ti, and CrCo alloys, etc.
Both internal and external mixing schemes of mental powder production have been developed in NCKU to achieve good quality of the products, Wang added.
