Dr. Chu-Fang Lo, the former dean of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Bioscience and Biotechnology, once again earned National Chair Professorship Award established by The Ministry of Education, which is regarded as the highest academic achievement in Taiwan for her outstanding performance in the shrimp disease researches.

Dr. Lo attributed the honor to many people’s efforts. “I appreciate NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su’s supports and encouragements and the former NCKU President Huang-Huei Huang’s assistance. I am grateful to the members of my research team as well for their strong supports and excellent performances. Without any of them, it wouldn’t be possible for me to be awarded.”

“In the two decades, we kept doing researches on the shrimp diseases. We found the crucial gene to replicate and successfully picked it out. Finally, we bred the shrimps that were immune to white spot disease. With the help of other 7 colleges at NCKU, we could put our researches into practice and set up the collaboration between academia and industry,” she pointed out.

Dr. Lo’s researches are also recognized internationally. Her research on Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease was once published on Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America. Her research on white spot disease was also recognized by World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), and she was assigned to be one of the reference experts in white spot disease laboratory of OIE. Dr. Lo has already published 166 papers, and the number of citations of the papers are over 5568.

Dr. Lo also values her teaching besides doing researches. “I hope my students can learn from practical works. That is the main reason why I founded a research center of shrimp disease and reproduction in Annan district in Tainan City. Students can work here and to gain the experiences in the specific fields. Moreover, they can learn the importance of collaborating with people and integrating theory and practice. My anticipation is that students can be experts in their fields and to contribute more to the society in the future.”
