National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) the Department of Civil Engineering (CE) built the first rolling test machine in Taiwan. The machine is now located at the Orbital Engineering Laboratory, CE.

Professor Chen-Ming, Kuo said, “This is the first rolling test machine in Taiwan. Because the rolling test machine is not selling internationally, laboratories have to construct their own one. It took us one and a half year to designed and developed.”

He indicated the importance of having own equipment, “It is impossible to carry out a test in reality. Only through conducting experiments in the laboratories can we better understand the vehicle design and the operating load. The experiment database can be used to help improve driving safety and passenger comfort.”

The rolling test machine weight 1.5 tones and is half of actual steel wheel size. It allows to evaluate the resistance of the wheel during rolling under different load condition. Most importantly, it can test the risk of derailment under high-speed conditions.

A full-sized rolling test machine is expected to be designed next year. Professor Chen-Ming, Kuo said, “We can run large-scale experiments in the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering in Kuei-Jen Campus once the construction is completed. With the rolling test machine, Taiwan is able to develop its own database and skills regarding the impact of earthquake on rail transport.”

Orbital Engineering Laboratory, CE was established on 2004. Its biggest feature inside the laboratory is the model of the circular line in Kaohsiung. Outside the laboratory is the model of Taiwan railway. To further develop research skills in orbital engineering, the first rolling test machine in Taiwan was constructed.
