NCKU first set up a lifelong learners’ program for alumni
Tainan, Taiwan, October, 2016
National Cheng Kung University is to be the first in Taiwan to set up the lifelong learners’ program, providing opportunities for alumni to apply for a minor study and take courses they missed or develop different skills.
Alumni are welcome to register for courses at any time once gaining the approval of the Director of the minor program. The tuition is based on the number of credits hour. After completing required courses, they will receive a certification.
Many companies now allow people with certification of required skills to apply for the job. The lifelong learners’ program can thus help expand alumni’s career path.
Nowadays, many students take a double major or minor. Extra credits from 15 to 40 are needed for them to get the certification. Some students give up their minor in order to graduate on time. Among 200 students applying for the minor, only half of them successfully finished their studies.
NCKU indicated that many alumni hope to come back take course in order to increase knowledge in another field. For example, alumni from the College of Medicine would like to take courses in the Department of Law to defend themselves if a medical dispute arise. Alumni from the Department of Architecture would like to take courses regarding marketing management to help them remain current in their fields. Many alumni working in the high-end industries are also inclined to enhance their knowledge in law in order. They hope to know more about their intellectual property rights and contract rights.
The program was approved in September, 2016 and is expected to be implemented next semester.
