Tainan, Taiwan, July 13, 2016
A special workshop on creative design thinking is currently taking place at the Institute of Creative Industry Design (ICID), National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, to train students of design and business with practical-based courses.
The 7-day workshop is called db.Bootcamp which was initiated in 2014 by ICID to serve as a platform connecting industry and academic.
ICID Director Prof. Shuenn-Ren Liou said at the opening ceremony on July 10, “The whole purpose is to bridge the gap, between design school and business school. So this is an interdisciplinary corporation between the two, which is very important for NCKU, not only for NCKU but also for high education of Taiwan.”
Leslie Tsai, another key initiator of db.Bootcamp, said, “since 2014, every summer, we has invited 3 partner clients to raise up-to-date issues which allow participants to find the best answers through design thinking process.”
This year with the topic, ‘TOGETHER’ we focus on social design and citizen empowerment, said Tsai.
“We invited three social enterprises to categorize three themes - City & Culture conservation, Food & Agriculture and Elderly Care,” Tsai added.
Prof. Liou said, “I think it’s very important to look forward to how academic can collaborate with our industry working on the issue of design toward social enterprise.”
A total of 30 students from interdisciplinary fields including design, business, engineering and medicine, took part in the camp with representatives from three social enterprises as tutors along with 5 teachers from ICID involved.
Rika Miki from Tokai University School of Medicine, Japan, who participated in the group of Elderly Care, said that she started to learn human centered innovation methods in i.school of University of Tokyo this year and she’d like to learn more about design thinking to enrich her study.
Miki also said, “As a medical student, I think it will be a great opportunity to know the situation of elderly people in Taiwan.”
Peyyu Chen, a student of Chinese literature, who joined the group of Culture&City Talk, said that this workshop gives her great opportunity to work with other students from different background and the discussions with her teammates and tutors are very fruitful.
Bootcamp 2016 runs from July 10 through July 16.
