An interdisciplinary team from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, won Bronze Award and Best Presentation Award in the ‘Engineering Medical Innovation Global Competition’ (EMedic Global 2016) held by the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK).

NCKU team formed by 5 students won the honor for their project on ‘Thermo-Tech Shoes’ which have powerful functions to provide solutions for diabetic patients.

The project involved interdisciplinary efforts from many different departments including clinical medicine, materials science, electrical and electronic and information engineering.

The project of Thermo-Tech Shoes is designed to improve blood circulation by delivering heat and far infrared ray, inhibit bacterial growth by lowering foot temperature, warn the patients in time to avoid infection, and monitor abnormal pressure and gait to evaluate the danger score automatically.

For a very long time, NCKU is dedicated to encouraging interdisciplinary collaboration, especially responds to the rising trend of the application of innovation technology in medical services.

EMedic Global 2016 is designed to advance biomedical engineering and promote international exchange.

It is the world’s first medical innovation challenge which invites university students from around the world to design and develop clinically-driven and patient-centered technology innovations for the future of medicine and healthcare, according to CUHK.

A total of 40 student teams from five continents participated in this inaugural EMedic Global 2016, which aims to promote the research and development of medical engineering and draw more talents to the field.

The award presentation ceremony was held on August 20 at the Hong Kong Science Park.
