Tainan, Taiwan, July 27, 2016
As part of the on-going Banyan Tree Conservation Project at Tainan-based National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), a special workshop was held on campus to explore to reconstruct the images of the century-old banyan tree through the artistic and ecological perspectives.
LuxuryLogico, a contemporary artist group based in Taiwan, was invited to organize the workshop in which the artists led the students to do hands-on activities and art courses.
The university invited LuxuryLogico to create works of public art on campus and the artists visited the campus and found the banyan garden most representative to the spirit of NCKU.
The trees are old and flourishing which bears the meaning of the growth of the school in the past 85 years, according to Chen, one of artists in LuxuryLogico.
The course includes introduction of the banyan tree during the conservation period and the future intervention of art creation. Also, group discussion involving ecology, literature and culture were included to trigger more originality and creativity among the students for the following work.
The second old Banyan tree was severely damaged by the typhoon Soudelor on August 8, 2015, according to the university.
Under the guidance of the botanical experts, the university launched the “Banyan Tree Conservation Project,” according to which temporary fences were set up around the tree for its protection and self-preservation.
Luxury Logico is created by four contemporary artists born in the 1980s: Chih-chien Chen, Llunc Lin, Keng-hau Chang, Geng-hwa Chang, known by their lighthearted style that centers on the idea of “DELIGHTFUL WEIRD-LAND.”
