NCKU Alumnus Dr. Kang Lung Wang Elected As Academician Of Academia Sinica-wn
Dr. Kang Lung Wang, one of the outstanding alumni of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Department of Electrical Engineering was elected as Academician of Academia Sinica, the university revealed today.
Dr. Kang Lung Wang is currently the Distinguished Professor and Raytheon Professor, EE Dept., UCLA.
His specialties are in Spintronics, Semiconductor Nanoelectronics and Nanotechnology.
Dr. Wang has creatively resolved many challenges critical to semiconductor electronics and helps create the new field of spintronics.
He brought spintronics to CMOS industry: (1) he has discovered new effects due to relativistic spin orbit coupling and its engineering to control magnetic moment and to enable magnetic switching by electric field with a many-orders-of-magnitude increase in energy efficiency with topological insulators. (2) Previously, he also pioneered strained semiconductors that had major impact on the continued scaling of electronic devices and beyond. (3) His concept of phonon engineering of quantum confinement of phonons with SiGe superlattices and nanostructures demonstrated a new direction for improving the thermoelectric figure of merit.
His practice of original and organized research is at the heart of enabling greater functionality and higher energy efficiency in integrated circuits.
His concept of phonon-engineering to confine phonons in reducing thermal conductivity improves stalled figure of merit of thermoelectrics for decades. The experimental realization was demonstrated with SiGe superlattices and other nanostructures, among others. (US patent #6,060,656. 2000; Applied Physics Letters, 77:1490 - 1492. 2000). Many superlattice publications of different materials have continued in the last decade.
Dr. Wang has published more than 600 journal papers and has 25 patents.
Academia Sinica held its biennial Convocation of Academicians from July 4 to July 7 culminating in the announcement of the 2016 list of Academicians on July 7, 2016. This year, total of 20 new Academicians and 2 Honorary Academicians were elected.
