NCKU and CUHK jointly work on city revitalization - Public.

Since 2015, the Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID) of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) has co-organized the 'Hong Kong (HK) - Tainan Cultural & Creativity Exchange Program' with the Creativity Lab (c!ab) at Wu Yee Sun College of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to promote Taiwan's experience in city revitalization to HK.
In last November, the team led by Prof. Shi-Nan Liu and Prof. Jia-Han Yang, from NCKU ICID, visited CUHK to offer trainings for innovations in urban development and thinking. Moreover, they brought CUHK students to investigate the problems Sai Kung community was facing and brainstormed possible solutions to revitalization.
Prof. Shi-Nan Liu said, 'Approximate 20 teachers and students led by from CUHK Wu Yee Sun College had visited Five-harbour District in Tainan to explore how a historic city was revived this January.' He indicated, 'HK put more emphasis on economic and commercial development. University students seldom have a chance to deep inside the community. Their visit thus could be a totally fresh experience to make them realize how culture can be important to innovation.'
After CUHK teachers and students' visit to Taiwan, students actively asked for the opinions of the store owners, residents, and tourists in Sai Kung community. They discover their problems are similar to those of Tainan in the past, which are the lack of public spaces, traffic congestion, and the few opportunities to communicate for old and new residents. Students are now applying the successful experience of Tainan racialization to Sai Kung community.
In the end of last year, NCKU and CUHK jointly set up a joint research center for positive social science to promote community building, empowerment and rejuvenation, humanized technology, civic virtues, and personal and collective wellbeing.
