In order to attract top students from Malaysia, National Cheng Kung University
(NCKU) started a project called 3-and-half-year project last year, which means students enrolling in the project can attend massive open online courses (MOOCs) before entering the college, and then they can graduate in 3 and half years.

The project is quite appealing to many students in Malaysia, and before taking part in the project, they have to stand out from other participants in a competition related to math and science, which is held by NCKU Alumni from Malaysia.

The competition is considered one of the most important competitions in Malaysia. Students who have great performances will have the chance to be admitted to prestigious universities in Asia.

Tan Sia Huat, the champion of the completion last year, has set his mind on studing in Taiwan since he was a high school student in Malaysia. He currently studies at the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at NCKU.

“The competition is very fierce in Malaysia. Almost every Chinese independent high school will recommend 3 to 5 top students to participate in the competition. I was also one of the three students from my high school, Chung Hua Middle School No.1.” Chen said.

He continued, “I didn’t expect I would be the champion in the competition. It was my dream of studying in Taiwan that gave me such a great support and motivation.”

Currently, there are about 200 Malaysian students at NCKU. Among them, there are 9 students from Chung Hua Middle School No.1.
