NCKU initiates computer programming courses to help underprivileged child - Public.
Prof. Wen-Yu Su of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) and Hon Hai's Yonglin Charity Foundation are coordinating their efforts to train teachers specialized in computer programming to improve underprivileged education in Taiwan by running The School of Hope Teacher Education of Computer Programming Project together.
Prof. Su has been devoting himself to volunteer teaching projects for decades, and he also has led his students to teach computer programming for children in remote areas for 3 years.
Because of his unconditional act, Yonglin Charity Foundation would like to cooperate with Prof. Su to run the teacher education project.
Prof. Su said, 'Computer programming has become a required course for students. Children in urban area have enough faculty resources, which children in remote area lack. What's worse, I am afraid that the course will eventually teach students the methods of programming without training them to spot problems and to solve them.'
He added, 'The functions of computer are becoming more powerful. We have to learn how to control computers, and the key of this is computer programming. Thinking is the crucial factor of it.'
The teaching education project is divided into 2 phases. In the first phase, participants will learn how to use some basic software. In the second phase, they will learn how to program. Moreover, participants are expected to think independently while programming in order to understand the purpose of computer programming.
'I will demonstrate some wrong examples of programming in the second phase to make participants realize that they won't accomplish their goals if they only copy the methods given by the examples without thinking. I want them to know the importance of independent thinking,' Prof. Su pointed out.
The School of Hope Teacher Education of Computer Programming Project is held on weekends from late-May to early-July at Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering. Besides Prof. Su, Associate Prof. Chung-Ping Young and Dr. Yuh-Ling Wang are also devoting themselves to the project and make it even better.
