In order to make parents in the Northern Taiwan get to know more about National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su, deans of the nine colleges and executive managers held a parent-teacher conference in the Taipei area on May 21 at Howard Civil Service International House, with more than 500 parents participating in the conference.

President Su first introduced directors in different administrations, deans in the nine colleges and the features and introductions of the colleges and NCKU.

President Su pointed out, “Though NCKU is located in the Southern Taiwan, the international learning environment, outstanding faculty and facility and various curriculums enable students to absorb various kinds of knowledge and to broaden their international horizons. It is absolutely a right decision to send children to NCKU.”

She continued, “NCKU also aims to promote public welfare. When the earthquake hit the Southern Taiwan on February 6 this year, administrators concerned all provided their professional knowledge to helped rescue the victims.

On the conference, parents showed their concerns about the safety of the children. They asked whether it would be dangerous for their children to leave their hometown to another faraway city to study.

In respond to the question, NCKU Vice President for Student Affairs Yuk-Ying Tung said that NCKU has a standard operating procedure for taking care of student who is in need. If there are accidents happen, instructors will arrive immediately to deal with the problems. Moreover, NCKU has a hospital, and if necessary, the hospital will take care of the students at NCKU first on the condition that it will not affect other patients.

President Su and Mr. Bruce Cheng, the founder and honorary chairman of Delta Group, started a conversation about how to head to the future fearlessly. Mr. Cheng is a strict father, and he shared his experience of how to raise his children into independent and responsible men and the story of himself confronting and dealing with the situation when his children chose to travel another path and had a great failure in their business.

“I was busy with my career when my children were little, and therefore neither had I interact with my children regularly nor had I taken good care of them. This, however was not totally a bad thing. Children would depend on their parents too much if parents wait on them hand and foot. They would thus be unable to be independent,” said Mr. Bruce.

He added, “I have gone a hard time when I was a child, and it was because of the experience that I could stand those hardships when I ran my business at first and never gave up.”
