The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures (FLLD) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, recently threw a special party to celebrate William Shakespeare’s birthday.

Prof. Carolyn Scott, the main host of the party and the teacher of British Literature Class, said, “We talk about how great Shakespeare is, we read some of his poems, and we throw a party together because I think that is always a good way to help the department stay together and think about the importance of literature not just in the classroom but in other area.”

She pointed out, “Shakespeare was not just for an age but for all time. Even though now is four-hundred-year later and we are on the other side of the world where Shakespeare lived and died, we can still appreciate the greatness of his poetry and the characters of the drama that he developed.”

April 23 is said to be the birth and the death of Shakespeare. To commemorate the day, students from the class of British Literature gave an excellent performance of reciting Shakespeare’s sonnets.

When being asked why choose to recite the Shakespeare’s sonnet, Felice Li said, “This sonnet is talking about the limited time people have and can not control it. At the end of the sonnet, it tells us to cherish our time. It makes me think of the time I spent with my officer in my club. After two months, I have to go to another country. I strongly feel the limited time and want to cherish the time with them.”

Henry Lin, Student who studies in the British Literature Class shared about his favorite Shakespeare’s playwright-Twelfth Night, “I think it interestingly depicts the disguise of gender and the essence of gender itself. You can find how Shakespeare use the language and his experience to illustrate this kind of dilemma.”

Doris Lin, the Student of FLLD, also expressed her inspiration get from Shakespeare, “I really love one of his work called the Merry Wives of Windsor. It is a kind of comedy. If you know Shakespeare, he is famous for its tragedy, but for me, I feel like nowadays, I can still find people around me to fit the character in Shakespeare’s works.”
