U.S. Department of State’s CLS Program assigns NCKU CLC to be the only Chinese learning site in Taiwan - CNA

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) Chinese Language Center (CLC) in Tainan is assigned to be the only Chinese learning institution in Taiwan by Critical Language Scholarship Program (CLS Program) from U.S. Department of State, starting from June 7 to August 7.

“The hosting institutions were all in China, but this year NCKU CLC is the only site in Taiwan added to the list.” said NCKU CLC Director Mei-Chen Ho.

She added, “The reason why NCKU CLC can be the only program hosting institution in Taiwan is that our teaching faculty has been internationally recognized.”

The U.S. has already added Chinese into the list of elective courses in colleges. Participants fulfilling the courses in the CLS Program will receive U.S. academic credits. It will be a precious opportunity to market NCKU worldwide through the program, according to Ho.

Students in the CLS Program are required to take two years of study in Chinese beforehand.

The program provides an intensive 8-week language learning environment designed to cover the equivalent of one academic year of university-level Chinese study.

The CLS Program Project Director Jeanette Owen pointed out, “We hope students can ameliorate their language skills and build relationships between the people of the U.S. and other countries through the opportunities provided by this program.”

Besides Chinese, the CLS Program also offers other 13 critical languages.
