NCKU round table discussion on the future of temple rituals and crafts - Public.
The Culture and Creativity Incubation and R&D Center at National (CCIRDC) Cheng Kung University (NCKU) hosted the second Betwin on Culture x Craft x Design, at 321ArtistVillage (321巷藝術聚落) this Saturday April 16th 2016.
Bifen Huang chaired a round table discussion with four experts on the topic of temple rituals and crafts. The crafts expert and Joss Paper shop owner, Qingiang Huang introduced the ceremonies that happen in temples, together with the Ceremonial Products like Joss Paper and other offering materials. He explained how rituals originated in the past and evolved to current day practice. However, knowledge on the customs is fading and popularity is decreasing.
This is why three designers joined the discussion on how to keep the essence of tradition, but to also evolve to modern life. The designers have various backgrounds but all relate to the rituals and craft: Qianyun He (Sybil Ho) is an incubate at CCIRDC specialized in facilitating ceremonies like weddings, whereas Yu-Hsuan Chang (Momo) makes paper objects like home-models and bicycles intended for ceremonial burning.
The third designer, Lilian van Stekelenburg from Lily66 was invited by the Dutch Design Post for a residency to work on this subject. Lilan van Stekelenburg and Gerard Jasperse work on a crafts innovation exhibition sponsored by Creative Industries Fund NL (from the Netherlands), CCIRDC, NCKU and Tainan Bureau of Culture Affairs.
This Betwin round table discussion and the concluding exhibition (from May 10th) happen at Satellite321 (衛星). Satellite321 is one of the houses at Tainan 321ArtistVillage with a new initiative on collaboration on culture and crafts, more events and exhibitions like this are to be expected here in the future.
