NCKU student designs a portable wind turbine

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) PhD student You-Ren Chen from the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics won gold award at the ECO Design competition of Dassault Systemes, for his a portable wind power turbine which can be folded for portability and is less than one meter in height when fully assembled, the university revealed recently.
Chen introduced the device and said, “it is convenient for people to carry outdoors for activities such as going to a picnic.”
“It is a foldable wind turbine that is much smaller than normal wind turbine. It only takes you one to two minutes to assemble the generator,” he explained.
The idea of foldable design comes from the telescopic umbrella. Fabric folding fans mitigate the centrifugal forces generated by rotating blades. The generator supplies 10 Watts.
The generator looks like an electric fan and it applies aerodynamics when it operates.
Chen said, People can maximize power generation by connecting more than two fans together. Also, the device can connect to a solar power generator to expand its output.
Renewable energy is pretty common in nowadays world, said Chen, and to make the best use of it, generator must be redesigned to fit the individual’s need.
Micro, foldable, and portable designs are vital features. With these three advantages, generator can provide critical backup power where power is unavailable at seaside or countryside areas.
The wind turbine can also be useful in developing countries or in disaster situations where on-the-grid power isn’t available, according to Chen.
