NCKU students create table game “Oh!MyGod?” featuring temple culture - CNA

Temple culture is quite a distinctive feature of Taiwanese society. Integrated the cultural elements into the design, three students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has created an interactive table game debuted at a recent digital art exhibition MovISee.

Oh!MyGod? is an interactive table game created by Yu-Tzu Liao, Yi-Xiang Jiang, and Shao-Ying Yang, all first-year graduate students from the Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID), NCKU.

Yang said, “The idea of the game Oh!MyGod? began from our field visiting in West Central District in Tainan City, where has numerous temples and shrines all have great history and cultural memories.”

“In Taiwan, folk religion combines different art, technique, history and culture; and not only becomes the commitment to spirit to Taiwanese, but also an important collective cultural asset of the wisdom of our ancestors,” she added.

However, it’s a pity that nowadays not many young generations value this kind of traditional culture, said Yang.

They made a hand-made prototype of the table game which is currently showcasing at the MovISee exhibition at NCKU Art Center.

Jiang introduced the game and explained, “We implement a table game based on the mythology, history and the aesthetic techniques information of gods and temples of Tainan to attract young people to familiarize the culture.”

He said, It takes four people to play the game and to start each players has to pick one God card from nine and download APP, and the player will have one piece of his/her God's puzzle. According to the picked God card, the player will become one God's believer.

Also, there are a total of nine Gods are involved in the game, including the Jade Emperor, Guan Sheng Di jun, Mazu, Zhenwu Emperor, Cheng Huang Ye, Confucius, Yen Ping Chun Wang, Seven Star Empresses, and Tu Di Gong.

Yang noted, “Through the project ideation to field investigation and interview, what we gain from it is not only creating one table game, but also the cultural substance as being Taiwanese.”

After the feedback and support we collected during the preparation and exhibition time, we hope we can make our prototype into a real product to bring into full play, according to Liao.

Also we hope there will be more and more people understand and appreciate the beauty of our own culture, added Yang.
