Tainan, Taiwan, December 23, 2015

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, is playing the host to the first energy engineering alliance forum, which was opened on the morning of December 23 with more than 25 university faculty from five countries including the United Sates, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, and Taiwan.

Professor Chin-Hsiang Cheng, the department head of aeronautics and astronautics at NCKU, on behalf of NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su and College of Engineering Dean Pao-Shan Yu welcomed the guests and gave opening remarks.

Cheng said, this forum is a great platform where universities from countries particularly in Southeast Asia and Taiwan can interact and share information regarding energy issues.

He also said, “Collaborations follow the friendship. We have to have the friendship first and then we can talk about partnership.”

“In the very near future, energy would be a very important issue. You cannot avoid it and you cannot just pretend energy issue is not there for human being,” Cheng noted.

The two-day forum included a total of 24 sections of forum speech regarding the latest research on energy given by professors from Hochiminh City University of Natural Resources and Environment, University of Nevada, Universiti Technologi Petronas, Kasetsart University, Chulalongkorn University, and National Cheng Kung University.

Dr. Paisan Kongkachuiychay, Associate Dean for Research at Kasetsart University, who visited NCKU for the second time and said, “It’s really nice to initiate the forum where we can learn from our neighbors and we have high possibility to make some work together and share resources.”

“Energy is a hot topic not only regionally but globally,” said Dr. Paisan adding, “Thailand is also trying to promote alternative energy and invests a lot on gasohol which is a mixture between gasoline and ethanol, produced from agricultural products.”

He also revealed that next month Dean Yu from NCKU College of Engineering will visit Kasetsart University to sign a MoU between two organizations.

Dr. Ku Zilati Ku Shaari, Head of Center for Student Internship, Mobility and
Adjunct Lectureship at Universiti Technologi Petronas also revealed interest in
partnership with NCKU in the field of engineering. She said, “We have just started collaboration with NCKU by sending our chemical engineering students to do internship at the research labs.”

Dr. Yi-Tung Chen from University of Nevada who has been involving in the research of solar cell design said, “Energy has to be looked at in a wide spectrum, everything has to be balanced.”

He mentioned he gave a talk on energy about two years ago at NCKU. “Each one of the energy has pros and cons,” he said adding that from all of the energy options, energy people have to look into all the conditions and find a balance.
