‘Plastic Nature’ furniture exposition at Dutch Design Post
Tainan, Taiwan, December 4, 2015
National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) students created ‘Plastic Nature’-furniture in a unique collaboration with Dutch Designer Alexander Pelikan from PeLiDesign.
This December an exhibition has opened at 321 Artist Village (321巷聚落), presenting the outcome of a workshop held at C-Hub in NCKU. Four teams investigated in plastic molding techniques and wood-crafting to result in an experimental design of a stool made from plastic and (natural) wood.
The basis of inspiration lies at the ‘Plastic Nature’ stool from PeLiDesign that was awarded the Mart Stam Award of 2008 for best chair of the Netherlands. It was acknowledged as the first chair that combines plastic and wood, therefore matching with the name of ‘Plastic Nature’.
“It is a rather difficult technical design to combine plastic and wood in a joint to connect legs with the seat of a chair. But, if designed well, this can be the beauty of the design” says Bart van Bueren, Visiting Expert at NCKU and director of Dutch Design Post. Bart van Bueren led the workshop together with Alexander Pelikan and Nose from Planett. “Plastics are made with molding and can only be produced in large numbers, so to make this ‘one of a kind’ designs the students used existing plastic products to redesign into a ‘plastic-nature’ stool. In this way the stool becomes a product-hack or re-use of existing product. This is playful and gives the designs another story.”
Students investigated different plastic manufactures and different types of plastics. Then they learned and practiced different wood-working techniques, to combine the wood with a plastic object. They also did product testing using a pressure bench to test the maximum strength of a stool. “to my surprise cheap plastic stools can handle over 1000kg before the break in pieces” says one of the NCKU students.
