Deputy Assistant Secretary of U.S Department of Energy visits NCKU to foster collaboration

Dr. Phyllis Yoshida from the United States Department of Energy (DOE) and Mr. Alven Lam from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, to discuss possible collaboration.

Dr. Yoshida and Mr. Lam were invited by NCKU to give a talk in the 2015 International Symposium on Energy Technology and Strategy (ISETS 2015) and later have a meeting with NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su on October 27.

NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su welcomed the distinguish guests in her office and said, “I would love to see if we can through more formal arrangement facilitate in depth and details to specific collaboration.”

Having a great conversation with the faculty in NCKU, Dr. Yoshida said, “We are already having some researchers to talk to each other, and next step is really to define those complimentary areas where we can both support each other as partners.”

Dr. Yoshida who is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asia and the Americas in the Office of International Affairs at the U.S. DOE is responsible for implementing Administration policy for and supports the development of international cooperation on science and technology issues and energy policy issues.

She noted, “Increasingly whatever you do in science and technology especially in energy, it’s interdisciplinary in international, so the more international networks and connection we can make the faster that we can get the technology develop.”

President Su said, “The school in terms of faculty with very high percentage of faculty graduated from the US including myself so there’s already very natural bondage.”

“We are committed to position ourselves nicely in a way of coming to the next era because that you take the benefit of all the interdisciplinary strength and hopefully we can maximize that,” she added.

A team from the urban design, industrial design and also architect, double e all together is chosen to be the top one team represented Taiwan going to MIT in the coming November for the future city design and that certainly showcasing how we see our students should benefit from the education here in this university, revealed President Su.

She continued, “Along the line we also would like to see our research can kick that particular niche as well. We have had always the research on the engineering areas and certainly that would take us to the scope of engineering-related research.”

Mr. Lam is a passionate alumnus of NCKU and he was delighted to come back to his alma mater saying “I graduated in 1979 urban planning, and I’ve been working with United States Department of Housing and Development and dealing with the housing issues, dealing with building better homes, building better cities, is a lot of common interests.”
