NCKU invites UK’s Charnwood Arts CEO talk about digital arts festival - Noodls
The CEO of Charnwood Arts in the UK Kevin Ryan was invited by Professor Ming Turner of the Institute of Creative Industries Design (ICID) at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, to give a talk on October 16 in ICID Open Space.
In the beginning of the talk, Ryan asked two questions of the audience - what is festival and what makes festival different from any other days of a week.
He said, In terms of modern technology and our access to arts and culture, both are the things happening around us. If we live in a city, there's some kind of art events going on every day, like theater, cinema, dance, visual arts exhibition that we can participate even on line.
In his talk entitled 'When Did We Become An International Festival?', Ryan explored the concepts of 'festival', 'international' and 'digital' to ask how our culture and cultural landscapes continue to be transformed by pervasive digital technologies interacting through the medium of our own chemically coded presence in an exponentially interdependent world.
He illustrated his talk with his own images commissioned from a variety of festivals including Derby Feste and Frequency Festival of Digital Culture in Lincoln, UK, and from materials gathered from other festivals world-wide including recent local festivals in Taiwan.
'This is my fifth visit to Taiwan,' said Ryan, 'and I'm very interested in the cultural
fusion of religion arts and society so I have been to three temple processions in Yanshui and also recently in Donggang.
'I just spent nine days photographing the Welcoming Da Quin Suei processions, interviewing local people, experiencing social life with people,' he added.
He also introduced his own organization's use of digital technologies and the importance of multi-level experimentation in areas of the known as well as pushing forward with burning tip innovation in technologies and the arts.
Talking about the forthcoming NCKU Biannual on the theme of digital arts in 2017, Professor Turner said, 'It would be very useful and beneficial for the students and members of the staff at NCKU to hear Kevin Ryan's experience in terms of involvement in the organization and partnership with digital arts festivals in the UK.'
We would like to combine the engineering research capability with arts in NCKU, according to Turner.
'I think it's very important to for the university to be able to develop digital arts festival on campus so our students and people in the university community can see our strength not only in engineering but in arts especially in digital arts,' she said.
