Food safety forum held at NCKU to promote food security - Noodls
A forum about food safety took place at the Department of Life Sciences, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, on October 6 to discuss food safety issues in Taiwan.
NCKU as a platform to bring in all the resources will set up a food safety accreditation and certification framework and promote good agricultural products, enhancing consumer's confidence in local food.
The forum was co-organized by NCKU Center of Bioscience and Biotechnology and Ping-Tung Agricultural Biotechnology Park (PABP) to raise national awareness about the food safety among the decision makers and the public.
NCKU vice president Tung-Yang Chen on behalf of president Huey-Jen Jenny Su presided over the open ceremony and extended his warm welcome to all the guests.
Chen said, food safety has been a primary concern in Taiwan as the number of food scandals has been on the rise in recent years.
He said, NCKU is committed to help the government and food industry in Taiwan to combat problems with tainted food and other food safety concerns.
Also, a declaration of food security was signed at the opening ceremony by NCKU vice president Chen, PABP director Dr. Chin-Cheng Huang and people from the industry and television network.
According to PABP director Dr. Chin-Cheng Huang, PABP is the only national science-based park specialising in agriculture, which integrates agri-tech resources from the industry, academia, and the government and serves as a platform with multiple purposes such as R&D, production and marketing, processing and transshipment.
In the forum, Prof. Thomas Avery Garran, a famed herbalist and writer, was invited to give a talk on organic agriculture and food safety.
Several food-related issues were also discussed in the forum including how to reduce food miles, agricultural food production, and eco-friendly farming.
