National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, hosted the fifth Taiwanese-German Criminal Law Forum on September 30 with experts and scholars from Germany, Taiwan, Korea and Hungary together discussing the recent development of criminal laws.

Dean of College of Social Sciences Prof. Yue-Dian Hsu on behalf of NCKU President Huey-Jen Jenny Su welcomed the guests and said, Our special thanks go to Professor Sinn and Professor Zöller who led the German delegation from Germany to Taiwan.

This forum displayed the importance of international cooperation and mutual legal assistance, said Hsu.

Deputy Minister of Justice Ming-Tang Chen also attended the forum and said, Law is practice-oriented; however, the legal studies and theories are important to the practice of law.

Prof. Chun-Jen Chen, head of the Department of Law in NCKU, “The society in Taiwan is undergoing a rapid transition right now, the criminal laws especially the criminal procedure laws are the keys to help the society go smoothly through the transition.”

“I think this forum will play vital part to the transitional process occurring in Taiwan,” according to Chen.

After the opening ceremony, Prof. Mark A. Zöller from University of Trier, Germany, gave a keynote speech about telecommunications issues and call record retrieval.

The Taiwanese-German Criminal Law Forum was launched by members of National University of Kaohsiung, University of Osnabruck and University of Trier in 2011.

The fifth Taiwanese-German Criminal Law Forum kicked off in Kaohsiung yesterday and takes place in NCKU from September 30 to October 1.
