NCKU set up solar water heater at Taiwan’s northernmost school - CNA

A solar water heater set up at Taiwan’s northernmost school by the Energy Research Center of National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) recently marked the milestone for solar thermal application in Taiwan.

An unveiling ceremony was held on August 12 at Dongyin Junior High and Elementary School which is the only school located in Dongyin, Taiwan’s northernmost township.

The Energy Research Center has been authorized by the Bureau of Energy, Ministry of Economic Affairs to promote solar water heaters since 2000, according to Prof. Keh-Chin Chang, the director of the center.

He pointed out that the cumulative area of solar collectors installed was approximately 1.57 million square meters by the end of 2014.

Approximately 0.3 million systems are currently operational, corresponding to a reduction of 0.3 million metric ton carbon emissions per annum, he added.

“Solar water heating is the most successful example of renewable energy applications in Taiwan,” Chang said.

The Matsu archipelago, which is constituted of five islands and few islets, is the northernmost territory under Taiwan’s jurisdiction.

Global warming and climate change caused by carbon emissions into the atmosphere are raising worldwide concern, said Chang, and using renewable energy sources is of practical importance for a country’s socio-economic development.

Chang also said, the isolation in the Matsu archipelago is favorable for utilizing solar water heaters.

However, the first solar water heater installed there was delayed until 2011; and only 24 systems have been installed in the two main islands: Nangan and Beigan so far, according to Chang.

To promote solar thermal application, the local subsidy program is activated by the Lienchiang County government in 2015.

Nevertheless, to enhance public awareness, the first solar water heater, donated by the Sunjue Co. Ltd., was installed in Dongyin Junior High and Elementary School, according to Chang.
