UK professor of urban planning visits NCKU - CNA

(中央社訊息服務20150622 17:25:09)Dr. Cecilia Wong, a professor of spatial planning in the University of Manchester, United Kingdom, who also the director of Center for Urban Policy Studies, recently visited National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.

As one of the regular visitors from internationally esteemed universities and research institutes, Dr. Wong has involved in some of the seminars and conferences organized by the Department of Urban Design at NCKU, mostly in the latest trends of green city and smart design.

Dr. Wong said, “The friendship starts from years ago when the faculty from NCKU Department of Urban Planning invited me to join i-City conference. We have a lot of collaboration and working together in teaching and designing.”

“It’s a lovely campus, the colleagues are great, and for the planning we shared in NCKU is very good,” she said.

Dr. Wong talked about her experience in class, “I went to do some studio presentations of the students and also give some presentations and also met some planning people and the government.”

She said that she is very impressed that students try to do the presentation in English. “The standard is very good and the observations of the students are very good,” according to Dr. Wong.

Based on her observation, she said, “Students here tend to be very strong in design but less to think through baseline analysis. Strong in physical design but less to think about social or economical side of design.”

On the other hand, students are open to comments which will lead them to conceptual thinking, she added.

She said she is currently City of Manchester co-director of the network, mainly to promote urban research.

In Britain, smart city is a buzz word right now. People talk about it a lot. Manchester has an initiative particularly with China, according to Dr. Wong.

“My feeling is after knowing more about the smart city initiative, a lot is about using digital technology, using big data to design. I think these are important but a lot of time it depends on the discussion,” Wong said, “It may not that well-tailored to the need of the cities.”

“A city is smart means that things can function easily,” she said and added that smart management and smart behavior are essential to make a smart city possible.

She also urged the urban designers to get out the comfort zone to collaborate with people with different academic backgrounds.
