NCKU holds chemical explosion simulation drill - Noodls

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, hosted its annual Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) chemical prevention and relief campaign and prevention of toxic chemical disasters in academic institutions’ drill on May 29.

The event took place at the Department of Chemical Engineering, Tzu-Chiang campus, and mainly targets rescue procedures in the case of laboratory poisoning or danger. To this end, the function also comprised of a one-hour long simulation drill.

President Huey-Jen Jenny Su thanked all participating units for their strong support and assistance in making the drill a major success, citing her hopes that each laboratory now has a clear procedure in the face of disaster, in order to ensure the safety of everyone.

This year is the Executive Yuan’s EPA Toxic Disaster Prevention and Relief year, for which the EPA has scheduled a series of college campus toxic disaster prevention and relief campaigns across the country, with the first southern event being hosted at NCKU.

Apart from the simulation drill, the event also consisted of an exhibition of various equipment – including toxic disaster contingency vehicles (11 tons) – as well as an education on laboratory chemical safety and introduction of protective equipment, toxic decontamination experience, and other related disaster prevention and relief activities..

According to President Su, the key to disaster prevention in an academic institute is in each department having clear preventative planning and evacuation routes, to which they can implement.

Through enactment of drills and disaster prevention campaigns, it is hoped that students are able to develop their awareness, in order to minimize the risk of disaster occurrences in the future.

Chemical engineering laboratories use many types of chemicals, captain Chang points out, as such, it is better if each laboratory door is clearly labeled, so that in the case of accident, information can be acquired in due to time.

Additionally, there should be a leading manager in the disaster prevention management staff.

Each department should establish their own standard operating procedure, so that in the case of disaster, valuable time can be saved.

Deputy director Chen added that the drill was well organized, and all participating units were on spot. “The first priority in disaster prevention is good preparation, so that accidents can be resolved quickly.”
