The opening ceremony of 2015 International Forum on Innovative Planning Education which is known as iCities was held on May 28 at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.
Prof. Shiann-Far Kung, the chairperson of the Department of Urban Planning hosted the opening ceremony and said, “NCKU has partnered with the Innovative Planning Education and Research Alliance (IPERA) to continue the previous work and to develop further progress on planning education.”
“The theme of iCities this year is Green Cities,” according to Kung, “and green cities are resource-efficient cities. To green the cities is an urgent need.”
He also said, “The exhibition has two parts. The first part is to present the result of planning and design of different schools and the second is a review of the international workshop of the 2014 iCities.”
“One of the highlights is the studio work of the department of urban planning of applying the concept of green city on different scales,” Kung added.
“Green Cities” as the theme of this year’s event called for posters from all over the world to demonstrate their strategies and solutions to make cities more resources efficient and livable by showcasing their studio project.
Prof. Hsin-Tzu Betty Chang said, “The idea to organize this event came up with a concern that many good planning projects have been done but usually got less attention than architecture.”

A total of two keynote speeches are organized during the two-day event. Professor Qing Shen from the Department of Urban Design and Planning of University of Washington gave a talk on Enabling Sustainable Urban Life: Re-conceptualizing Transportation Planning on the first day.
