British cellist Steven Isserlis to perform at NCKU tonight - Noodls

Giving young cellist suggestions, British cellist Steven Isserlis said, “You have to love music. I do think some young people are encouraged to care about career, performance, projections more than that actually talk about and think about music.”

“And if you don't love the music, you'll be empty in performing,” according to Isserlis who will be performing a cello recital tonight in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, accompanied by Tainan-born pianist Ya-Fei Chuang.

Acclaimed worldwide for his technique and musicianship, Isserlis enjoys a distinguished career as a soloist, chamber musician and educator.

“I love playing and writing and teaching. It's all the same. It's all about communication. It's all about music,” said Isserlis at the press conference on April 22.

He also said, “Somehow I felt that I was taught by some really great musicians so I have to pass that on. It's my duty.”

“We gave concerts to children in Paris. I love doing that,” said Isserlis. “And I wrote two books to children, and one of them had come to Taiwan long time ago,” he added.

Talking about the program tonight, Isserlis said, “All the pieces are equally important. They all wonderful pieces and all very varied in its own different way.”

The program will include Fantasiestucke, Op. 73 and Romanzen, Op. 94 by R. Schumann, Cello Sonata in D minor, Op.41 by D. Shostakovich, and Cello Sonata No. 2 in F Major, Op. 99 by J. Brahms.

Having his cello with him, Isserlis said, “My cello is made in 1740 by Montagnana. I got it twenty years ago. I always play Kabalevsky Cello Concerto and Shostakovich on this cello.”

Steven Isserlis Cello Recital will be taking place on Friday, April 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Cheng-Kung Auditorium at Kuang-Fu Campus, NCKU.
