NCKU students win top prize with pregnancy service design

A student-based team from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has developed BOBY which is a pregnancy service design with a simple, accurate thermometer that predicts the ovulation period and also suggests the best date to get it on.

By winning the first prize for Taiwan in the 2015 Microsoft World Citizenship Competition for new generation design, the contestants will compete at Microsoft Headquarters in Seattle, USA, in the Imagine Cup 2015 in July.

The team members include Cheng-Hung Wang, Wen-Chien Yang, Ho-Chun Lai from the department of Industrial Design, as well as Chih-Hao Hsueh from the department of Computer Science & Information Engineering.

Women measuring their basal body temperature (BBT) to find the best ovulation period, by traditional methods have to measure every day, which is annoying and is easy to forget.

The uniqueness of BOBY lies in letting men take part in measurement of the basal body temperature.

It gives males an opportunity to be emotionally involved in the pregnancy process and thus bring both parties closer into intimacy.

Wen-Chien Yang says that the requirement for the Microsoft design competition was to solve a most difficult worldwide issue and design a product to help as many people as possible, consequently expanding the horizon of health services.

We started off with the assumption that men have no clue what measuring of the basal body temperature is all about and then gathered resources to better understand the concept of BBT.

Assistant professor Yu-Hsiu Hung from the department of Industrial Design and associate professor Tien-Hao (Darby) Chang from the department of Electrical Engineering gave guidance in the basics of a 'progesterone' for the designed product, Ho-Chun Lai mentions.

Last summer, Ho-Chun Lai and his team mates did a survey and found out that women had trouble measuring their basal body temperature after waking up and before doing any exercise, which is the most suitable time to measure, because activity will raise the body temperature and thus influence the interpretation and accuracy.

The basal body temperature must to be measured daily. Every other day is not alright and will affect the accuracy of prediction.


BOBY Pregnancy Service Design improved the way women basal body temperature by sticking the device under the armpit before sleeping. The the device automatically measures the body temperature and only passes the lowest value to an APP during sleeping time.

Each day, the program automatically uses the lowest values for a final record, thereby beating the traditional method of marking a calendar day after day, and changing it into a horizontal line graph that makes it more convenient for couples to view the data.

The APP stores the body temperature data of the man and the woman and exchanges this to both parties. Depending on the basal body temperature data of the female the device calculates the ovulation period, besides giving an early notification before the period arrives. Such an early notification is beneficial for the best conceiving time and for the partners to prepare, thus increasing the chances of conception.

The APP also comes with a social sharing function to exchange information for the couples who downloaded the same APP and helps to spread information about pregnancy.

In order to let the general public know more about BOBY Pregnancy Service Design, the team made a special introduction movie with a foreign male in a responsible role and a foreign female in the leading role.

The work on BOBY Pregnancy Service Design was divided as follows: Cheng-Hung Wang, Wen-Chien Yang, Ho-Chun Lai from the department of Industrial Design were assigned to the task of designing the exterior, the APP user interface, user documentation, while data programming was the responsibility of Chih-Hao Hsueh from the department of Computer Science & Information Engineering.

Moreover, he evaluated the feasibility of Cheng-Hung Wang and other designers APP interface and strived to overcome structural difficulties by working hand-in-glove with the team. In all, the project took approximately seven to eight months to complete.

The result from the graduates of 104 batch of National Cheng Kung University's department of Industrial Design will exhibit from May 1 till May 4 at the Taipei World Trade Organization conference for new generation design.
