Tainan, Taiwan, May 4, 2015
As one of the most prestigious scholarships for students in National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Professor Li Ke-Rang Scholarship has been established for 25 years. A total of 118 students received the scholarship this year, revealed the university recently.
The 26th scholarship ceremony took place on April 29 with Professor Li in attendance, granting 118 scholarships for recipients.
Behind this scholarship is a heart-touching story. Professor Li led a hard life when he taught in the department of mechanical engineering, so some of his students donated money to improve his life after they were successful in the society.
Professor Li did not use a penny at all but saved the donation as the scholarships, which is today’s Professor Li Ke-Rang Scholarships.
Nowadays, many graduates from the department of mechanical engineering have voluntarily donated money for scholarships, benefiting up to 2000 students. It is the most renowned scholarships in Taiwan’s universities.
Professor Li emphasized that it was not the money but the love of successful alumni returning what they received from this university mattered. He then encouraged the recipients to pass down the good will.
NCKU former president Dr. Hwung-Hweng Hwung said that the ceremony held every year is a time for students and teachers to gather together again. He hoped that the recipients will be as successful as Professor Li Ke-Rang.
Also NCKU former president Dr. Zhe-Ru Ma said the scholarship represents the intimate relationship between students and teachers, hoping the unique culture of the department of mechanical engineering will prevail in Taiwan.
