NCKU hosts its annual Jade Mountain Forum

“Nanotechnology has brought benefits for society and environmental engineering should look for some of the risks that exist,” said Paul Westerhoff, a professor of environmental engineering from Arizona States University, USA, today at a forum held by National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.
The opening ceremony of 2015 Jade Mountain Forum on Sustainable Environment and Environmental Nano-Technology Conference was taking place on April 27, 9:00 a.m. in NCKU’s International Conference Hall with more than 200 experts and scholars from America, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
NCKU Vice President Tung-Yang Chen on behalf of the university welcomed all the guests traveling long distance to NCKU. The representatives from Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan, and Environmental Protection Bureau in Tainan City Government also attended the ceremony.
Chen has highlighted the social impact of research on environmental engineering in his remarks.
He also said, “The Sustainable Environment Research Laboratories and Department of Environmental Engineering in NCKU has done a great job in building a platform for researchers from USA, Japan, and Taiwan to get involved in the latest development in environmental engineering research.”
NCKU professor of environmental engineering Juu-En Chang who is also the director of Sustainable Environment Research Laboratories, served as the conference chair, explained that this year’s Jade Mountain Forum included Environmental Nano-Technology Conference to expand the scope of research and involve more people in the discussion.
“It’s a great honor to invite Prof. Paul Waterhoff from America, Prof. Junji Shibata from Japan, and Prof. Ruey-An Doong from Taiwan to deliver plenary lectures,” according to Chang.
As the first plenary lecture, Waterhoff gave a talk on environmental sustainable use of nanotechnology. He said, “Environmental engineering should look for some of the risks that exist; however, there's still some opportunities to look at nano-materials from recycling point of view.”
“Titanium dioxide in food that makes candy white, that we can use the same technology for different function in water treatment plan so turns out that Titanium dioxide can react with light and do beneficial water treat processing for us,” according to Waterhoff.
He noted, “To purify the water by using the same material in our food, in this way we don't create new chemical to put into our drinking waters where we don't know the risks of.”
Also, Prof. Junji Shibata from Kansai University, Japan, talked about recycling process development of lithium ion batteries (LIB). His talk focused on the recycling technology of used LIB, where he explained the overall process and separation method.
In Plenary Lecture 2, Prof. Ruey-an Doong will talk about treatment of environmental micropollutants using multifunctional nanocomposites.
In the two-day forum, topics such as precious metal recovery technology, soil pollution remediation technology, green innovation and environmental technologies and carbon reduction strategies are included. Groundwater and soil survey equipments are exhibited as well.
