NCKU professor Chyan-Deng Jan elected Environmental and Water Resources Institute Fellow - Noodls

Dr. Chyan-Deng Jan, a professor of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan, has been elected as a Fellow of the Environmental and Water Resource Institute (EWRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the university announced today.

The 2015 EWRI Fellows will be recognized during the Annual AAWRE Diplomate Induction Ceremony at the 2015 World Environmental & Water Resources Congress in Austin, Texas, USA, on May 18.

Created in 1999, EWRI is a civil engineering specialty institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the oldest national engineering society in America.

EWRI services are designed to complement ASCE's traditional civil engineering base and to attract new categories of members (non-civil engineer allied professionals) who seek to enhance their professional and technical development. The Pittsburgh Chapter of the EWRI was initiated in 2000.

Dr. Jan has been teaching at NCKU for 22 years, having served as the department chairman (2010-2013) and as the director of the Disaster Prevention Research Center (2004-2007). His teaching and research areas are related to coastal engineering, hydraulic engineering, landslide, and debris flow.

Among the highlights of his distinguished career, Jan developed a rainfall-based debris-flow warning system that has been successfully used by the Taiwan government for debris-flow warning practice since 2002. For his efforts, the Taiwan government awarded him with a Third Merit Medal in 2012.

In addition, he won the Academic Award from the Chinese Soil & Water Conservation Society in 2000, the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Taiwan Ocean University in 2007, and several teaching awards, including the UCKU's Distinguished Teacher Award in 2002.

Author of 4 books, including Gradually Varied Flow Profiles in Open Channels: Analytical Solutions by Using Gaussian Hypergeometric Function (Advances in Geophysical and Environmental Mechanics and Mathematics), Jan has had more than 100 papers published in peer-reviewed journals.
