Tainan, Taiwan, March 24, 2015

This March, Dutch Designer Simone de Waart leads 33 National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) students and entrepreneurs into a workshop designing with tactile Material Experience.

Participants learn about the expression of materials, with a focus on the tactile (touch) aspects to enhance a products experience, the university says.

One of the workshop participants is an Industrial Design student, she says: “The process of this workshop is really different from what I’ve learned so far. Normally we start with a product, but this time we start with the study of materials and experiencing these raw substances. After we gain enough understanding of this, we transform it into a product.”

Among the participants are NCKU students with a design related study, but some participants already run a design company and want to train themselves more. Seven of them are entrepreneurs at the Culture and Creativity Incubation and R&D Center (CCIRDC), the university's incubator program for creative businesses.

It is also special that so many of the participants have an international background and all of the seven teams communicate mostly in English with each other.

NCKU Visiting Expert Bart van Bueren, who invited Simone de Waart to his Dutch Design Post, says: “As the participants are so diverse, the teams also learn a lot from the different perspectives everyone has.”

Simone is Material Designer and director of the company ‘Material Sense’, but she is also guest teacher at the Industrial Design department at Eindhoven University of Technology (the Netherlands).

This workshop takes place at C-Hub; the new building of the College of Planning and Design, specially designed to have more interaction between university, city and the business community.

The outcomes from the workshop will be presented at the Dutch Design Post in 321 Artist Village.

This ‘Touch-Expo’ opens on March 31, and then after one month will travel to a new location.
