Kurdish students pursue petroleum engineering education in NCKU
Tainan, Taiwan, March 17, 2015
Ahmed Mustafa Ahmed and Ali J Jani are away from home at Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq to study in Taiwan and strive for their dream of becoming a petroleum engineer. They are currently studying in the Department of Resources Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan.
“Before I went to Taiwan, I got accepted in a college of electrical engineering in Baghdad, the capital city of Iraq. At that time, the security there was bad and I was frustrated that I can’t study,” said Ahmed.
“I heard from my friend there was a study program in Taiwan. When I couldn’t decide to go to China, Russia or Taiwan, my friend told me that you have to choose Taiwan because the life here is so great,” Ahmed added.
Ahmed had spent five years in Taiwan. He was graduated from the Department of Chemical Engineering in NCKU last year and just accepted in the Department of Resources Engineering this semester. He said, “I enjoy my life in Tainan very much.”
“The transportation in Taiwan is super convenient and the food is amazing here in Tainan,” he added.
Ali is Ahmed’s best friend and both of them are accepted in Dr. Bieng-Zhi Hsieh’s Carbon Dioxide Sequestration & Reservoir Engineering (CO2RE) Lab in NCKU.
We are very happy to have Ali and Ahmed in our lab. They help the local students to get the pictures of life in the Middle East and the friendship the local students offer makes them feel welcomed, said Dr. Hsieh.
Also, our department is the best institute of petroleum-related research in Taiwan. I think Ali and Ahmed will get well-rounded education here, according to Dr. Hsieh.
He also noted, the CO2RE Lab is mainly focusing on the applied technologies for the unconventional gas resources, anthropogenic CO2 reduction, and renewable geo-resource energy.
Ali is in the second year of his master program and impressed about what he learned in the lab. He said, “I participating in many underground exploration projects which is called “logging”, made me forward aiming on being a field engineer.”
“Even though I’m from a land rich of petroleum and natural gas, but that didn’t give me the chance to go near rig sites, neither gave me the opportunity to understand how we find these resources technically, he said.
Ali rrcalled his first time of visiting CPC natural gas fields in Miaoli. “I was welcomed by those seniors who have learned basics and we as a team accomplished one huge step regarding the understanding of formation underground through reservoir saturation tool, and cooperation with Schlumberger,” he said.
He also said, “Now I am eager to finish this stage as soon as possible and find a job related to petroleum production engineering.”
On the other hand, Ahmed was inspired by the successful life of his cousin who works for a local petroleum company to set his goal on petroleum engineering. He said, “Since my country has a lot of resources, I think it’s wise to go for a career in petroleum industry.”
