NCKU Medical School holds White Coat Ceremony - Noodls

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) College of Medicine held the White Coat Ceremony in Cheng-Hsing Hall of the Cheng-Hsin Campus on February 27, as a transition for the 79 fourth-year medical students from the study of preclinical knowledge in classrooms to the acquirement of clinical experience beginning in August in the hospital.

The ceremony includes introduction of each student, orations from the Dean of the Medical College, Prof. Jang-Yang Chang, Deputy Superintendent of National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Prof. Tzuen-Ren Hsiue, and Chairman of Department of Medicine, Prof. Wei-Jen Yao, as well as a speech giving by special guest Dr. Chao Pin Hsu, who is dedicated to bridging the gap of medical resources between the city and country.

'After four years' training, you are finally able to enter the hospital to learn more about clinical knowledge. White coat means not only the end of fundamental training but also more responsibility,' said the Prof. Jang-Yang Chang, 'As you proceed to higher position in the hospital, a lot of lives count on you.'

'Today is the turning point of your seven-year training. One thing I would like you to learn is clinical reasoning, which is to turn the knowledge in books to practical skills,' stated by Prof. Wei-Jen Yao 'Lastly, you need to stand in the patient's shoes so as to truly help him or her properly.'

Most importantly, the ceremony is highlighted by the ritual of "cloaking" in which white coats are given to the students from practicing doctors. This signifies that the students are qualified to proceed to the next stage of medicine learning and that they are ready to bear more responsibility and face the challenges ahead.

Last but not least, the ceremony ends with a moving video featuring teachers' encouragement to the students and experience sharing from senior students, Tsung-Hua Lee and Jiun-Yang Huang.

The coordinator of the White Coat Ceremony is one of the fourth-year medical students, Tsung-Yi Tsai. He stated that the theme of this year is called 'Give Me White' which means that the students shall hold their faiths in hands firmly and let their dreams fly.
