NCKU team backed on Kickstarter for brewing kit Lulu's Hand - Noodls

A Tainan-based team led by Dr. Wen-Yu Su from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has design a new brewing kit for coffee called Lulu's Hand. They created a prototype and in 40 days raised US$15,892 on Kickstarter.

"We spent two years researching and developing the prototype accompanying with more than one hundred discussions and tests," said Su who is a coffee enthusiast led a research team cooperating with local brass manufacturer to develop Lulu's Hand.

The team experiencing a whirlwind of orders from people who are interested in coffee since the close of their successful crowdfunding campaign in January.

Su, who is a professor of computer science runs the SCEAM Lab. at NCKU, is part of an emerging generation of scientists who are leveraging the world of crowdfunding, and social media to promote and raise money for research.

Su's project raised almost $15,892 in pledges from 143 backers through Kickstrater.

The success of his project has been about realizing the idea, raising the money and creating incentive among his students and in the general public about startups.

According to Su, through social media and crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter, a startup is able to form relationships with future customers before the product even exists, which opens up opportunities for many.

I hope Lulu`s Hand's success will motivate local factories in Taiwan to transfer from foundry business to investing startup plans, said Su.

Also, the students may see this as an opportunity to realize their potential and achieve what they want to make or do, he added.

The university has been encouraging startup culture on campus and will continue to create a supportive environment for faculty and students to carry out startup projects.
