More than 150 international students from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) gather at the Prince Dormitory on campus during the lunch time today for a cultural activity, celebrating the coming of Chinese Lantern Festival.

The international students from nearly 30 countries including Japan, Korea, United States, Canada, France, Germany, Swaziland, Paraguay, and Australia have participated in Yuanxiao making and enjoying the traditional food together.

NCKU CLC Director Rong-Fu Wu also had some Yuanxiao with the students and said, “The center has fostered cultural understanding through education and fun.”

“Lantern Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the first month of traditional Chinese calendar. It is also the first night to see a full moon which symbolize unity and perfection,” according to Wu.

Matt Burgess, a 24-year-old Australian student who is studying Chinese in CLC for six months already, has tried Yuanxiao for the first time and said, “It tastes fantastic! I do enjoy the activity a lot and thanks for the treat.”

Burgess also said, “I really like the culture and history of Tainan and the relax nature of it which is far more relaxing than Taipei or even Kaohsiung.”

Jessica Han from South Korea said, “I have been studying in NCKU CLC for almost a year and when I first came here I couldn’t really speak any Chinese, now I can have conversation with my friends, so I think I learned a lot.”

Han also said that she also learned the cultural meanings of Lantern Festival from the teachers which help her appreciate the food more.
