Taiwan, Russia’s ocean experts meet in NCKU - CNA
(中央社訊息服務20150129 17:37:34)A Russian delegation led by Dr. Robert Nigmatulin, Academician of Russian Academy of Sciences, visits National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, on January 28, with about 20 ocean experts in Taiwan to explore issues in oceanology.
The International Wave Dynamics Research Center (IWDRC) at NCKU has been working with Russian Academy of Sciences for the past two years to develop theoretical researches on extreme wave, tsunami, and acoustic remote sensing, according to the university.
NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung who initiates the Taiwan-Russia transnational research project extended his warm welcome to the delegation and said, “The fundamental ocean research in Russia is leading the world and we are happy to cooperate with the Russian team, running the simulation in NCKU.”
Academician Nigmatulin who is a specialist in wave dynamics visits Taiwan for the third time and he said the natural environment in Taiwan looks like a paradise to him and he always enjoy his time spending here.
The Russian delegation includes Nigmatulin, Peter Zavialov, Konstantin Korotenko, Kieran O’driscoll of the Shirshov Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IO RAS) which is the oldest and the largest Russian research center in the field of oceanology.
“As the director of my institute, I fully support the investigation,” according to Nigmatulin, “and I hope our experience and our participation is useful to your research.”
The joint investigation is important which is not only important to your country but also important for us, Nigmatulin said.
He added, the process in your region gives a lot of information to the understanding of ocean in our country too.
The results of the project is expecting to offer better understanding to the ocean and more possibility to predict what we’re going to have in the future, such as environmental problems, wave dynamics problems, and natural disasters, according to Nigmatulin.
The team of research group in this new research center IWDRC include the Tainan Hydraulics Laboratory (THL) and Research Center of Ocean Environment and Technology (RCOET), NCKU from Taiwan side and the Moscow M.V. Lomonosov State University (MSU), Wave Research Center, A.M. Prokhorov General Physics Institute, Russian Academy of Sciences (WRC, GPIRAS) and P.P. Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian Academy of Sciences (IORAS) from Russia side.
