NCKU hosts international conference on gerontological research

With rapid growth of aged population, the needs and medical care for the elderly is gaining its importance. The International Conference on Gerontological Research and Education was held at the Institute of Gerontology at the College of Medicine, National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), on January 24.
International experts in the field of Gerontology gathered at NCKU to share the latest research findings and results.
Dr. Chun-Yen Chang, the Dean of NCKU College of Medicine extended his warm welcome to the participants and gave his opening remarks.
According to Chang,
Two areas of aging issue have been focused. One area of study has concentrated on the study of aging process and the life of the elderly.
The researchers are interested in finding ways of helping elderly to achieve a “successful aging.”
The results from such studies of policy making and elderly welfare programs have raised the public’s awareness of the problems the aged faced and have thus improved the quality of life for the elderly.
Dr. Chao A. Hsiung who is the distinguished investigator and director of the Institute of Population Health Sciences at National Health Research Institutes (NHRI), gave a talk in the conference.
In her talk, Dr. Hsiung discussed core issues in Gerontology including age-related diseases, loss of energy, weakness and falls, study lifestyle, environment and genes.
Dr. Edward Schneider from the University of Southern California (USC) Davis School of Gerontology was invited to give a talk.
Dr. Schneider is a Professor of Gerontology at the Andrus Gerontology Center and a Professor of Medicine at the USC School of Medicine, with a joint appointment in Biological Sciences and Molecular Biology.
He shared the general issues in the research related to Gerontology, the key factors of aging, and several grand projects on aging studies in the United States.
