NCKU professor Chyan-Deng Jan named ASCE Fellow - CNA
(中央社訊息服務20141212 17:52:43)Dr. Chyan-Deng Jan, a professor of Hydraulic and Ocean Engineering and the director of Ecological Soil & Water Conservation Research Center at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, has been elected as a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the university announced today.
The honor recognizes Dr. Jan’s contributions to the ocean engineering profession, including his work as a researcher and educator.
The ASCE fellow status must be attained by professional accomplishments via application and election by the Membership Application Review Committee (MARC).
Currently, there are active fellows around the world number over 5,100. It is a prestigious honor for Fellows held by fewer than 4% of ASCE members.
Dr. Jan received his B.S. from the National Taiwan Ocean University in 1982, his M.S. from the National Taiwan University in 1984, and his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1992.
He has been teaching in NCKU for 22 years since 1992, and had served as the department chairman (2010-2013) and the director of the Disaster Prevention Research Center (2004-2007) in NCKU.
His teaching and research areas are related to coastal engineering, hydraulic engineering, landslide, and debris flow.
He has published more than 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals and wrote four professional books, one in English about open channel flow and three in Chinese about debris flow.
He is active in participating professional societies. Currently, he is the President of the Taiwan Disaster Prevention Society (2011-2014).
He developed a rainfall-based debris-flow warning system that has been successfully used by Taiwan government for debris flow warning practice since 2002. Taiwan government awarded him with a Third Merit Medal in 2012 for his contribution in this warning system.
He won the Academic Award from the Chinese Soil & Water Conservation Society in 2000, and won the Distinguished Alumni Award from the National Taiwan Ocean University in 2007.
He has also won several teaching awards, including the university’s Distinguished Teacher Award in 2002.
