NCKU students won 2014 Red Dot Award with design of medical kit for biker - Noodls

“Our design will help bikers have a safe journey,” said Ching-Tzu Tsai, student of industrial design from National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), Tainan, Taiwan. Her design of portable medical kit called CROSS, has won 2014 Red Dot Award: Honorable Mention.

Tsai working with her teammates, Xin-An Chen and Shi-Min Wong had spent nearly one year to finish the design of CROSS.

She said, Cycling makes bikers’ hands vulnerable in accident, and the design of CROSS is to enable bikers use one hand only to treat the wound.

The design also allows the biker to operate CROSS on the bicycle, avoiding the medical product touching the floor and keep its sanitation, Tsai added.

Tsai talked about the concept of the design saying, “Cycling has become one of popular sports around the world. Meanwhile, the number of bicycle accidents increased year by year. However, the medical treatment of bikers was generally ignored.”

Cyclists can fasten CROSS on the top tube of bicycle, according to Tsai, and when accident happened, it can be used to treat the wound immediately, rapidly and completely with one hand.

Tsai demonstrated the process of using CROSS and said, “First, you clean the wound with forceps pen, and then use forceps pen to pop the foil, clip Povidone-iodine cotton ball and sterilize the wound. Take advantage of bicycle weight, dressing gauze can be drawn out in one hand.”

“The design of viscose in one side let the gauze can cover the wound temporarily, avoiding blow down or drop out,” she added.

“CROSS” as tape dispenser allows the injury tear the tape off with one hand and do the last step of binding up.
