NCKU Dutch expert to build floating garden
Tainan, Taiwan, December 9, 2014
You have probably spotted a group of local citizens and foreigners around coastal areas in Tainan City over the last few weeks as they are collecting waste materials. Or perhaps you might see them building a floating structure near Anping Canal.
Currently, an eco-friendly art project called the Floating Garden is undergoing construction and many people from local and international communities are involved, according to National Cheng Kung University (NCKU) visiting expert of industrial design Bart van Bueren who initiates the project.
“To get Taiwanese more familiar with the beauty of water and floating structures, I want to introduce this floating garden,” said Bart van Bueren, a water architect who had already build a 1000m2 floating building in the Netherlands and now he turns his aim at Taiwan.
He also noted, the artwork is composed of floating waste materials like foam blocks and plastic bottles mainly which are bound together with old fishing nets and bamboo to become a floating raft for plants to grow on.
He invited designer Willem van Doorn from the Netherlands to collaborate with NCKU students in the creation of floating garden.
A group of Tainan volunteers and NCKU students followed Willem van Doorn into the harbors of oyster farms to pick up old poly-foam blocks, which were drifting in the water.
“If the foam stays in the water for too long, it will degrade into a plastic soup that can last for hundreds of years. Fish mistake it as food and they can die from a full stomach of foam,” said Bart van Bueren.
“Now, instead the foam harming nature, we create a structure for nature to grown on! In this way plants will actually purify the water of Anping Canal. The Floating Garden will attract more plants, fish and birds,” he said.
The Floating Garden will be one of the highlights on the Boulevard Art Festival Tainan which will start December 20th and is organized by Mizuiro House.
