NCKU, SA Water, China Steel collaborate to explore solutions to water challenges - CNA

(中央社訊息服務20141119 16:50:24)The 2014 Global Water Quality Research Center (GWQRC) Workshop was held on November 19 at Meeting Room 1of the Department of Environmental Engineering at National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, to explore water resources management.

Deputy Representative Martin Walsh from Australian Office Taipei, Assistant Vice President Shi-Long Chang from China Steel Corporation, and General Manager John Howard from South Australian Water Corporation (SA Water) on behalf of their organizations respectively attended the workshop.

NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung extended his warm welcome to the guests and said, “I would like to represent NCKU to express our appreciation to SA Water and China Steel Corporation Group for your generous support to this important research topic at NCKU.”

“The collaboration in water research between NCKU and the Australian Water Research Centre (AWQC) of SA Water goes back to 2004.” President Hwung added.

He also noted that the major outcomes of the collaboration include 6 joint research projects and more than 30 exchange visits. NCKU has sent both senior faculty staff and graduate students to Australia. The AWQC has hosted 13 separate post-graduate students and researchers.

With this strong basis, the AWQC and NCKU invited China Steel Corporation Group, also a long-term research partner of NCKU, to jointly found the Global Water Quality Research Center (GWQRC) in April, 2013, according to Hwung.

Australian Office Deputy Representative Walsh who is first time to NCKU shared his observation with the participants saying, “ I came here this morning, my first visit to NCKU and I was welcomed by many beautiful trees, I saw not only Taiwan trees but many trees from Australia so that is very symbolic great relationship between NCKU and Australia.”

He added, “We also share some similar challenges managing water resources.”

“Today, we co-work together and sit together to find future solutions to water supply for Taiwan and the world,” according to China Steel Corporation Assistant Vice President Chang.

Howard from SA Water said, “This is really an enduring relationship we have with NCKU and that with the partners through the GWQRC.”

“It’s the one year anniversary of the formation of the center. I think we have already achieved some fantastic things and there’s a lot more to come,” according to Howard.

He also talked about the similarity between Australia and Taiwan saying, “the population is about the same and very friendly people, and of course we both have very significant water challenges.”
