NCKU IIMBA receives NT$3.45 million grants for program enhancements
Tainan, Taiwan, November 18, 2014
The Taiwan Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved a NT$ 3.45 million grant to National Cheng Kung University’s Institute of International Management (NCKU IIMBA) for the enhancement of its Full English Program. This includes a matching fund of NT$900,000 from NCKU, the university revealed today.
The grant is to be used mainly for promoting the program, highlighting its teaching and research capabilities to recruit more international students, which comprises a significant majority of NCKU IIMBA’s student population, according to NCKU IIMBA Director Dr. Jeng-Chung Victor Chen.
He noted that the grant was awarded based on NCKU IIMBA’s proposal containing its plans to improve its students’ capabilities through its course offerings, its pool of faculty members, and the resources at its disposal.
This includes further increasing the number of international students, improving its local students’ international exposure and learning and global competitiveness, and further promoting multi-cultural learning, according to Dr. Chen.
He also indicated that the grant will be used for additional programs and activities designed to further promote the Institute and strengthen its ties with the international academic community, both for professors and students.
Dr. Chen has outlined the following plans of action to use the MOE grant:
1. The Information Systems and International Management Forum (ISIMF) (http://www.isimf.net/index.html)
The first forum to be hosted by IIMBA, this is aimed to promote research discussion, knowledge, innovations, achievements, and future trends in the field of management information systems and international management. ISIMF is open to local and international Information System (IS) and international Management scholars, PhD students, enterprises, and organizations. Editor-in-Chief, Senior Editor, or Area Editors of well-known international journals will be invited to deliver keynote speeches to share the research trends in the fields.
2. Hosting of Foreign Scholars and Industry Experts to Deliver Guest Speeches to IIMBA Classes
One of the thrusts of the IIMBA is to promote both academic and practical excellence. With this in mind, the Institute will therefore enhance its hosting of foreign scholars and industry experts to share their experiences on both research and hands-on management. These guest speeches are designed to enhance the learning experiences of both local and international students, gaining much more value for their education. Some foreign scholars are invited to offer intensive courses to broaden the breadth and the depth of the institute’s curriculum.
3. Arranging Educational Field Trips
Already a common practice of the Institute to enhance student learning experiences and gain practical business and management knowledge, these educational field trips will be further expanded to increase both the quality and quantity of the said trips. International students in particular can be further immersed to the local Taiwanese culture, gaining an even richer and more value-adding experience.
4. Hosting of International Faculty Camps
As the IIMBA also promotes national and international academic collaborations, it will aim to host a number of faculty camps and workshops, starting with faculty members from the top universities in Southeast and East Asia. Junior faculty members, especially those without PhD degrees, will get the opportunity to explore their options for attaining their doctorate degrees from NCKU while senior faculty members can get to expand their networks. Another target groups are the dept. chairs and the top administrators of the top universities in the regions. By hosting international faculty camps, people coming to NCKU can exchange ideas for further research collaborations or academic exchanges.
5. Software Training Camps
Research is at the core of the students’ graduation requirements. As such, the Institute also aims to invite research experts to conduct training camps and workshops on the vast array of new and breakthrough software being used for data gathering and data analysis. This additional learning experiences will enhance the masters’ thesis and doctorate dissertation output of the Institute, as well as the faculty members’ own research expertise.
To this end, IIMBA hopes that these additional programs and activities will enhance its overall offerings, and to further promote itself, hereby expanding its international and local student and faculty population, and therefore improving its reach and impact to the national and international community.
