Taiwan-EU symposium on ocean observation kicks off at NCKU - Noodls

National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosts Taiwan-EU Symposium on Ocean Observation and Its Applications, November 4-5, with more than a hundred participants from European countries and Taiwan to share knowledge and experiences on ocean observation, modeling and their applications.

At the opening ceremony on November 4, NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung extended his warm welcome to the guests coming from the world to participate the symposium.

Taiwan is an island situated between the pacific seismic belt and natural disasters occur frequently in Taiwan. Therefore, disaster prevention and environmental protection are pressing issues in Taiwan, according to President Hwung.

He said, we’d like to bring together local and international experts and academicians to exchange new information on marine and hydraulic technology.

Dean of College of Engineering Dr. Pao-Shan Yu who is also the chairman of the organizing committee, said, “I am very proud of our research achievement in the ocean and coastal area which has consistently assisted the government in disaster prevention and mitigation.”

We are honored to invite 13 distinguished guests from 8 different countries to share with us their outstanding research achievement, Dean Yu said.

He also noted, “The Coastal Ocean Monitoring Centre (COMC) in NCKU was founded in 1998. Today, it has remained as the pioneer of ocean monitoring in Taiwan.”

The Water Resources Agency (WRA) deputy head Chiao-Ling Tien said in her opening remark that the agency began working with NCKU Prof. Chia-Chuen Kao in 1998 to build a monitoring network comprising seven buoys and 12 tide stations.

“This monitoring network has now been collecting marine data for more than a decade, providing an important foundation for the coastal hydrological database,” Tien added.

The main topics of the symposium includes Ocean observation technologies, Ocean observation and its applications, Remote sensing and field monitoring, Ocean wave modeling, and Coastal hydrodynamic modeling and experiment.

The development and application of ocean monitoring technology relevant to disaster prevention and mitigation particularly will be the focus of the discussion in this two-day symposium.
