National Cheng Kung University (NCKU), southern Taiwan, hosts a symposium on university and transportation museum, September 22-23, to explore the management of university museum and values of transportation museum with approximately one hundred experts from Czech Republic, Russia, US, and Taiwan.

At the opening ceremony on September 22, NCKU President Hwung-Hweng Hwung extended his warm welcome to the guests and said, “NCKU Museum has been involved in the issues of university and transportation museums by holding the Workshop of Transportation Technology and Museum in 2010 and University Museum Conference in 2011.”

“In this symposium, we’d like to invite the experts and scholars from international institutes to share ideas and discuss fundamental issues such as the protection of academic-cultural heritage in a university,” according to President Hwung.

After the opening, Ondrej Dostal from Mendel Museum in Masaryk University, Czech Republic, gives a talk on New Challenges for Traditional Institutions – a University Museum at the Crossroads.

He said, “We can establish a modern institution but we cannot do that without listening to our audience and continuous work on our collections and the protections of academic values.”

Gary Edson from Museum of Texas Tech University is invited to give a talk on the University Museum.

A panel on University Engineering Museum and Department History Gallery is followed by the talks in the first day of the symposium.

The two-day symposium covers talks and panels on two topics, the management strategy of university museum in a time of transitions and the core value of transportation museum.

Karel Ksandr and Michael Novatny from National Technical Museum, Czech Republic, will talk about their museums on September 23.
